This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a intense meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
